When those were added along with the basic structure of the pc version, it was too much for the nes to run at full speed. The menu system made popular by dragonquest helped with this aspect of keeping the port faithful, but as an nes game it would disappoint players unless it had superior graphics and sound. Normally, at least in those years, consoles had better graphics and sound while pc games were more focused on allowing the player a multitude of possibilities (y’know, keyboard commands). What I was really getting at was that the reason the nes version ran slowly is that it is a pc game ported to an nes. At some point, someone is going to program a fully functional NES emulator inside that universe and then you’ll be able to play Mother there. The fun part is that there are a number of computer games that function as simulated turing machines, in that you can build any program using the game’s internal logic, such as Minecraft. It’d have a frame rate that “tends towards 0”. The NES could run any N64 program with the right interpreter and enough memory, but it would take an incredibly long time to play Mario 64. It points out that “turing complete” does not mean “fast”. Now, Ultima 4 was ported by a completely different company, and by and large it was considered an inferior port not living up to the job they did with Ultima 3.įor more details on turingalities, would be a fine starting place.

Ultima 3 is a fine game, but the NES version has a special place in my heart due to the added details such as… well, that great music. Even there though, the NES port improved the graphics and sound by a somewhat large amount over the PC version (released years earlier). True, I meant “ambitious for a console game”. It went with the party members going into the main character. Ultima 4 (nes, port from pc) had 8 party members. They did a very good job of keeping it true to the original, but that’s why it’s like that.
